A poem as we approach the annual migration of the Ruby Throat Hummingbird...

Be Not Sad For Me
by

Bernice "Bunny" DeBlois

Be not sad for me, or look forlorn
You will still hear the Sparrow's song.
No garden will you need to till
My thanks for the feeders
That you dutifully fill.

You were a Godsend while I fed my young,
And I also know, your hearts, I won.
My task was easier because of you.
While flowers faded
Sweet nectar was provided,
And helped us see it through.

So you Nature lovers, This tiny Hummer
Really must say
Before I take the Southern Way--
If you will be here in 2008
You just may see me
Picking out a mate
My Romeo will surely be there
Strutting his stuff
Charming us with his U dance,
Ruby feathers all a'fluff!

Kind humans, caring for little things,
Who whir with such great noise
Restores my faith in humanity
So, thanks to the farmers
Who grew sugar cane
Thanks to the harvesters,
Who took great pains.
And mostly you, who cared enough
To write emails,
Filled, cleaned feeder, and such!

And yet, we shall miss you, sweet feathered jewels.
Be safe on your journey and come back to us even more beautiful in the spring.
